Birds & Boars at The Gold Medal Concours
Rock Springs Ranch & Lodge, California April 29 – May 4, 2003

Gold Medal Concours Birds & Boar Rock Springs Ranch

Tuesday, April 29 – Sunday, May 4   Join Silvio Calabi and Doug Tate for a five-day double gun & rifle event, featuring an unusual mix of shooting and stalking as well as technical presentations by Krieghoff International and the NRA: Three boar stalks, a bobwhite & chukar hunt, a 300-bird Continental pheasant shoot (walk-up hunt after) plus 5-stand clays and the unique Western Championships rifle course.
This includes full admission to the Gold Medal Concours and the Western Double Gun & Rifle Championships, and each guest is entitled to display guns for judging in the Concours (if they wish), and to shoot a shotgun and a rifle in the competition, in the classes of their choice (if they wish).

  • Hunting Package price, exclusive of travel, licenses & game tags and gratuity, is $3,190 per person, double occupancy. Included: meals & lodging (Tuesday evening through Sunday breakfast), guides, shotgun ammunition for hunting, bird processing and boar dressing, entry to the GMC and display space for up to three guns, and one round each of the Western Double Gun & Rifle Championships (classes of your choice).
  • The Non-Hunting Package is $1,750 per person, double occupancy. Included: meals & lodging (Tuesday evening through Sunday breakfast), entry to the GMC and display space for up to three guns, and one round each of the Western Double Gun & Rifle Championships (classes of your choice).
  • Note: Boar stalks (dawn & dusk) are of course optional, and geared to the sort of rifles used in the Western Championships, with open sights.
  • Non-Hunting does not mean non-shooting; the $1,750 package includes clays and rifle target shooting, if desired, and the Continental shoot may be added (see below).
  • Options
    1. Continental pheasant shoot. Space permitting, a peg on the Continental pheasant shoot (Thursday, 1 May) may be added to the Non-Hunting Package for an additional $600. Pegs are shared by two Guns.

    2. Concours & Western Championships. Space permitting, some rooms or beds may be available for less than the full five-day event. Please inquire.

Calabi & Tate will be joined by James Baker, of the NRA, and Krieghoff’s Lee Lebas, gunsmith and double-rifle authority, who will bring sample rifles for guests to shoot. Whether you wish to shoot and hunt, to learn about and discuss fine guns and rifles, or simply have a ringside seat and a deluxe place to stay at the Gold Medal Concours and the Western Championships, this is a unique opportunity.

Rock Springs Ranch & Lodge is a supremely comfortable and scenic 19,000-acre hideaway in California’s central coastal range. (The ranch chef, Afif Espindola, was profiled in the September/October ’01 Shooting Sportsman.) Non-shooting activities include hiking and wildlife viewing, soaking in the outdoor spa, or simply relaxing on the lodge’s spacious porches or in the library, living room or guest rooms (all have full baths; many have fireplaces). The seaside communities of Monterey, Carmel and Pebble Beach are less than 90 minutes’ drive away.

Only 12 rooms (24 beds) are available in the lodge. For more information or to make reservations, contact Silvio Calabi at 207-594-9544 or [email protected].
