Gold Medal Concours d'Elegance of Fine Guns

GMC VII

F.lli Rizzini R1E 20-Gauge -- The Norman R. Blank Best in Show

7th Concours Awards and Shooting Championships
-- dedicated to the memory of Norman R. Blank

California's wine & gold-rush country is a wonderful place to be in early April, and fine-gun shooters and fans were especially blessed. In addition to beautiful spring weather, they had nearly a hundred fine guns and rifles to admire at the Gold Medal Concours, a dozen vendor booths to browse, and a host of shooting competitions and games to choose from, for both shotguns and rifles.

Norman Blank, of Pasadena, California, passed away a few days before GMC VII, of complications following heart surgery. He was a man of exquisite taste and an enthusiastic and knowledgeable collector of fine guns and rifles; a very fine game shot; confidante of the world's top gunmakers; the anonymous winner of the first Best in Show award (in January 2001, for his Barre-engraved Purdey hammer rifle); a tremendous supporter of the Gold Medal Concours; and a warm-hearted, humorous and giving friend. To Jackie, his widow, our support and sincerest regrets. To the fine-gun community at large, be it known that henceforth GMC Best in Show honors will be called the Norman R. Blank Best in Show Award.

The 7th Concours is indebted to noted fine-gun dealer William L. Moore, of Scottsdale, Arizona, who entered in the judging some two dozen of his personal guns and rifles. "A lot of these haven't been out of the safe in too many years," Moore said.

Judges

Gold Medal Concours judges are well-known authors, appraisers, makers and collectors, selected from the fine-gun community for their knowledge and expertise. Judges at the 7th Gold Medal Concours of Fine Guns included:
Roger Lake -- Fine-gun specialist at Bonhams & Butterfields, the San Francisco-based auction house; gun writer and well-traveled shooter. Livermore, California.
Richard Edlund -- Renowned collector of top-quality rifles and shotguns; winner of more Gold Medal Concours awards than any other entrant. Santa Monica, California.
Bruce Farman -- Member of long standing, American Custom Gunmakers Guild; stock-making specialist. Bremerton, Washington.
David Moore -- Long-time sales manager of William Larkin Moore, dealers & importers of fine guns, primarily from Italy and Spain. Scottsdale, Arizona. Note: Mr. Moore graciously recused himself from the jury in order to allow fair and impartial judging of guns entered in the GMC by his father, William Larkin Moore.
Hans Pfingsten -- Hans Pfingsten's grandfather was Imperial Forester for Kaiser Wilhelm II; Hans is an avid collector of European sporting arms and co-author of German and Austrian Gun Making of the Golden Age. Morongo Valley, California.
James Tucker -- renowned stocker and gunmaker, most recently with John Rigby & Company. Member, American Custom Gunmakers Guild. Medford, Oregon.
Silvio Calabi -- co-founder of the Gold Medal Concours; editor-at-large, Shooting Sportsman Magazine. Camden, Maine.
